KEY FACTS ABOUT THE BAHÁ'Í FAITHThe Nature of God
Please note: throughout this leaflet God is referred to as 'He'
rather than 'She' or 'It'. This implies that God is a being rather
than an object but is not intended to imply maleness - God is surely
beyond any concept of gender. The following quotations are all from
the Bahá'í scriptures.
God the Creator
"He is, and hath
from everlasting been, one and alone, without peer or equal, eternal
in the past, eternal in the future, detached from all things,
ever-abiding, unchangeable, and self-subsisting."
"A sprinkling from the unfathomed deep of His sovereign and
all-pervasive Will hath, out of utter nothingness, called into being
a creation which is infinite in its range and deathless in its
duration. The wonders of His bounty can never cease, and the stream
of His merciful grace can never be arrested. The process of His
creation hath had no beginning, and can have no end."
"...the worlds of God are countless in their number, and infinite in
their range. None can reckon or comprehend them except God, the
All-Knowing, the All-Wise."
"Regard thou the one true God as One Who is apart from, and
immeasurably exalted above, all created things. The whole universe
reflecteth His glory, while He is Himself independent of, and
transcendeth His creatures...All existence is dependent upon Him,
and from Him is derived the source of the sustenance of all things."
The Invisible and
Unknowable Essence
"Every created thing
in the whole universe is but a door leading unto His knowledge..."
"Know thou that every created thing is a sign of the revelation of
God. Each, according to its capacity, is, and will ever remain, a
token of the Almighty. Inasmuch as He, the sovereign Lord of all,
hath willed to reveal His sovereignty in the kingdom of names and
attributes, each and every created thing hath, through the act of
the Divine Will, been made a sign of His glory."
"... not a single atom in the entire universe can be found which
doth not declare the evidences of His might, which doth not glorify
His holy Name, or is not expressive of the effulgent light of His
unity. So perfect and comprehensive is His creation that no mind or
heart, however pure, can ever grasp the nature of the most
insignificant of His creatures; much less fathom the mystery of Him
Who is the Day Star of Truth, Who is the invisible and unknowable
Essence. The conceptions of the devoutest of mystics, the
attainments of the most accomplished amongst men, the highest praise
which human tongue or pen can render are all the product of man's
finite mind and are conditioned by its limitations."
"How can I claim to have known Thee, when the entire creation is
bewildered by Thy mystery, and how can I confess not to have known
Thee, when, lo, the whole universe proclaimeth Thy presence and
testifieth to Thy truth?"
The Station of
Humanity
"How resplendent the
luminaries of knowledge that shine in an atom, and how vast the
oceans of wisdom that surge within a drop! To a supreme degree is
this true of man, who, among all created things, hath been invested
with the robe of such gifts, and hath been singled out for the glory
of such a distinction. For in him are potentially revealed all the
attributes and names of God to a degree that no other created being
hath excelled or surpassed."
"Having created the world and all that liveth and moveth therein,
He, through the direct operation of His unconstrained and sovereign
Will, chose to confer upon man the unique distinction and capacity
to know Him and to love Him - a capacity that must needs be regarded
as the generating impulse and the primary purpose underlying the
whole of creation....Upon the inmost reality of each and every
created thing He hath shed the light of one of His names, and made
it a recipient of the glory of one of His attributes. Upon the
reality of man, however, He hath focussed the radiance of all of His
names and attributes, and made it a mirror of His own Self. Alone of
all created things man hath been singled out for so great a favour,
so enduring a bounty."
"All that the sages
and mystics have said or written have never exceeded, nor can they
ever hope to exceed, the limitations to which man's finite mind hath
been strictly subjected. To whatever heights the mind of the most
exalted of men might soar, however great the depths
which the detached and understanding heart can penetrate, such mind and
heart can never transcend that which is the creature of their own
conceptions and the product of their own thoughts...Immeasurably exalted is
He above the strivings of human mind to grasp His Essence, or of human
tongue to describe His mystery. No tie of direct intercourse can bind him to
the things He hath created..."
The Messengers of God
"The door of the knowledge of
the Ancient Being hath ever been, and will continue for ever to be, closed
in the face of men. No man's understanding shall ever gain access unto His
holy court. As a token of His mercy, however, and as a proof of His
loving-kindness, He hath manifested unto men the Day Stars of His divine
guidance, the Symbols of His divine unity, and hath ordained the knowledge
of these sanctified Beings to be identical with the knowledge of His own
Self. Whoso recogniseth them hath recognised God. Whoso hearkeneth to their
call, hath hearkened to the Voice of God, and whoso testifieth to the truth
of their Revelation, hath testified to the truth of God Himself....Every one
of them is the Way of God that connecteth this world with the realms above,
and the Standard of His Truth unto everyone in the kingdoms of earth and
heaven. They are the Manifestations of God amidst men, the evidences of His
truth, and the signs of His glory."
Among these Manifestations of
God are Krishna, Moses, Buddha, Christ, Muhammad and Baha'u'llah.
"God's purpose in sending His
Prophets unto men is twofold. The first is to liberate the children of men
from the darkness of ignorance, and guide them to the light of true
understanding. The second is to ensure the peace and tranquillity of
mankind, and provide all the means by which they can be established."
"Far, far from Thy glory be what mortal man can affirm of Thee, or attribute
to Thee, or the praise with which he can glorify Thee! Whatever duty Thou
hast prescribed unto Thy servants of extolling to the utmost Thy majesty and
glory is but a token of Thy grace to them, that they may be enabled to
ascend unto the station conferred upon their own inmost being, the station
of the knowledge of their own selves."
The Soul
"...every man hath been, and
will continue to be, able of himself to appreciate the Beauty of God, the
Glorified. Had he not been endowed with such a capacity, how could he be
called to account for his failure?"
"Know verily that the soul is a sign of God, a heavenly gem whose reality
the most learned of men hath failed to grasp, and whose mystery no mind,
however acute, can ever hope to unravel. It is the first among all created
things to declare the excellence of its Creator, the first to recognise His
glory, to cleave to His truth, and to bow down in adoration before Him."
Union with God
"Know thou of a truth that if
the soul of man hath walked in the ways of God, it will assuredly return and
be gathered to the glory of the Beloved....The soul...shall, after his
ascension, be possessed of such power that all the worlds which the Almighty
hath created can benefit through him."
"Just as the conception of faith hath existed from the beginning that hath
no beginning, and will endure till the end that hath no end, in like manner
will the true believer eternally live and endure. His spirit will
everlastingly circle round the Will of God. He will last as long as God,
Himself, will last."
